Handcrafted travel experience for life time
Nomadic Trek
Day 1: Rumtse - Kyamar
Time: 4 hrs
Distance: 10.9 km
Elevation gain / loss: +298m / -0m
The dusty trail will eventually take a U-turn as you leave Chhaba Chu and enter Kyamar valley. This point is the confluence of Kyamar stream and Chhaba Chu. Leaving behind Chhaba Chu, look for multiple rivulets. These are small streams and can easily be crossed. After 20 minutes of level walk, you will come across large green marshes on your right, suitable for camping. Here cross the stream and take the trail going left. The walk to Kyamar campsite is easy and over relatively flat terrain. The trail swirls inward along the natural scope of the valley, hike of 30 minutes will lead to a change in the landscape as green marshes give way to gravel. After 10 minutes, you will reach the base of the plateau. From here, observe a 3 way opening of the valley- take the widest valley in front of you. This is the logical trail going to the grazing grounds of Kyamar. After walking for about 30 minutes, the green marshes will re-appear along Kyamar stream.
Day 2: Kyamar - Kyamar La - Mandalchan La - Tisaling
Time: 6-7 hrs
Distance: 13.5 km
Elevation gain / loss: +786m / -384m
The trail now gradually climbs up as you approach the base of Kyamar La. After about 20 minutes of walking you will reach the centre of the valley. From here, take the wide SUV trail on your right. It takes an hour to reach the base of the pass.
Observe a small bridge made of boulders and stones over Kyamar stream, cross over and take the trail that winds upward on your right. From here, it’s a steep ascent all the way to the pass. The final section of the ridge is littered with tiny wildflowers.
Day 3: Tisaling - Shibuk La - Ponganagu
Time: 6 hrs
Distance: 14.3 km
Elevation gain / loss: +377m / -666m
start early in the morning to avoid the brutal afternoon sun. The initial part of the trek involves a steady 1.5km climb to Shibuk La, which is adjacent to the campsite. The altitude gain is around 1,000 feet. Cross the stream and head to the base of Shibuk La. The trail moves south-east and the pass is clearly visible above. There are several ways to reach the summit.
The straight route requires you to cross the stream towards your left and make a straight line upwards to the summit. This route is the shortest. However, the route has the maximum incline and is strenuous. The other way to go about it is to take the left side trail and reach the crest of the pass. This is a longer route but the ascent is gradual, at least initially. It takes about an hour and half to reach Shibuk La. The valley widens as you walk towards Nuruchen, a Changpa village. Looming ahead are towering Zanskar ranges, where you can easily spot the Horlam La ridge. It’s an easy but long walk all the way to Ponganagu.
Day 4: Ponganagu - Nuruchan
Time: 5-6 hrs
Distance: 17.8 km
Elevation gain / loss: +173m / -145m
The valley widens as you walk towards Nuruchen, a Changpa village. Looming ahead are towering Zanskar ranges, where you can easily spot the Horlam La ridge. It’s an easy but long walk all the way to Nuruchen, Nuruchen is used as a safe haven during bone-chilling winters by the Changpas. In the summers it looks like a ghost village with abandoned huts. There is a muddy stream gushing down from the Horlam La ridge, from the south west side. The rivulet is known as Nuruchen Lungpa and drains into the Tso Kar Lake. Pitch tents near the stream for the night.
Day 5: Nuruchan - Kyamayuri La - Rachung Karu
Time: 7-8 hrs
Distance: 19.3 km
Elevation gain / loss: +855m / -339m
Start our trek towards the Nomadic settlement of Rajun Karu with a gradual ascend crisscrossing streams along the way. The trail is along a meandering river with snowy mountains on either side. The Changthang valley unveils its extravagant scenery from this point onwards. Prepare for abrupt weather conditions and be equipped with rainproof jackets and covers for your bag. After a steady but steep incline followed by a descent to Rajun Karu you get to witness many camps of the Changthang nomads with Yaks and Pashmina Goats grazing on the pastures. The trail from Rajun Karu takes you across the fourth and taxing pass of Kyamayuri La followed by a long gradual descent to the campsite of Gyamar Barma which is possibly the most beautiful campsite of the trek with fantastic peaks surrounding you. Keep in mind that this is the windiest campsite of the trek. You can spend time here interacting with the Changthang Nomads and meet the "Cowboys" of Changthang with their horses.
Day 6: Rachung Karu -Gyamar Barma - Kartse La - Gyamar
Time: 3 hrs
Distance: 5.7 km
Elevation gain / loss: +213m / -251m
The trail from the campsite is across the river cutting through the campsite of Gyamar Barma and takes you over the steepest pass of the trek and the fifth pass, Kartse La. Halfway through the climb you get to see the Gyamar Barma campsite with its full glory with the meandering river, towering snowcapped peaks, Yaks and Pashmina goats grazing on the pastures, wild asses and marmots running around and the nomads with their horses. The steep climb takes you over the pass followed by a gradual descend to the campsite of Gyamar which is loaded with rivers and streams. Overnight in tents.
Day 7:. Gyamar - Yalung Nyau La - Korzok
Time: 5-6 hrs
Distance: 16.3 km
Elevation gain / loss: +300m / -905m
Today is the longest and hardest part of the trek. The trail from Gyamar starts straight away taking you to the sixth pass of the trek, Yalung Nyau. The climb is a gradual but a long ascent along a river in the midst of sharply jagged mountains. After crisscrossing the river at several sections, a sudden turn takes you to the pass over a decently steep ascent. The first view when you reach the pass is the blue waters of Tso Moriri Lake, unlike anything you have seen and a sight for sore eyes. But this is not it, now starts a steep descend over a rugged landscape with the latter half of the trail flattening out to reach the endpoint of the trek, Karzok. The enchanting freshwater lake of Tso Moriri stands elegantly with stunning mountains surrounding it. Take a walk along the shores and enjoy the tranquility this place has to offer.
