The ancient Buddhist kingdom of Zanskar is hidden deep in the western reaches of the great Himalayas. For most of the year the high passes are inaccessible because of snow, making the frozen Zanskar River the only way of transport by walking. Villages nestling high up on cliffs, the greenest fields where peas and buckwheat are grown and ancient monasteries are just some of the attractions on this spectacular trek.

The capital of the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Ladakh once known as ‘Little Tibet’. The city is dominated by the Leh Palace, former home to the banished royal family and above this, the Victory Fort. Both can be explored, and the palace houses an interesting museum with a variety of historical artifacts and local artwork. Below is the old city, of narrow alleyways and a bazaar teeming with activity. Despite only being open to tourists since the 1970s Ladakh is very much the center for tourism in the region and there are many hotels and restaurants for the visitors
